I'm finally pulling that "wall hanger" off the wall and using it!
Usually when we think about "wall hangers," we think about things that look good but wouldn't work well. Think mall ninja swords and commemorative movie swords (Shards of Narsil, anyone?).
But I have had a hatchet on my wall for some time, which has gone untouched since my close friend (an axe guy) gifted it to me. It's beautiful, and it's German.
That's right, I got me a Helko Werk hatchet, and I only look at it.
Well, that's about to change. I've been doing my research and learning how to sharpen axes (think circular motions) and just ordered a Lansky sharpening puck.
I'm going to put a nice edge on that German steel and start using my Helko Werk as I continue to explore my feral side.
It might be hard for a knife junkie to hear, but sometimes a knife isn't the best tool for the job.
I know—I know, crazy—but sometimes an axe just works better, say, at splitting wood.
In any case, I have a perfectly serviceable and well-used Home Depot hatchet that could last the rest of my life, if need be.
But there is something about the care, pride, and history that went into making this Helko Werk hatchet that makes it seem a shame not to use it.
I don't think I will become an Axe Junkie, but it is nice to have this high-end option as I explore developing my outdoor skills!
