Just a quick thought about regrinding edge bevels on folders or any other knife (though we hear about folder regrinds more often).
I have had one blade reground in my time so far.
I had my Hinderer XM-18 Spanto reground because I couldn’t bear it not having a super thin hollow grind with a flat ground tip any longer.
At the time, that Spanto was my favorite and most prized knife, but it was an awful cutter.
Now, I know I’m shallow and that the look of a knife means more than it should to me, but it should be able to cut, should the need arise.
So off the Spanto went to Josh at Razor Edge Cutlery. When it returned, it was beautifully thinly hollow, with an edge like a laser beam. Great, right?
Yes, but I now want to have a number of other blades reground, and it leaves me wondering. Where does it stop?
Yes, of course, I should have the SHF reground. and the 0640, and the Resco MDCF. And then what?
How slicey do I need to get?
Does it matter if my knives are “slicey” if they can still cut?
What am I slicing with my folders? Brisket? Turkey? Cheese?
The more I ask myself, the more ridiculous the gratuitous expenditure of money on regrinding seems.
Why not buy the knife according to the grind?
I don’t know. but in the meantime, I can justify the cost by claiming to be supporting the “local knife economy.”
