This weekend, I had to go to a major metropolitan center unarmed!
For most of our cities here in the United States, it is a given that knife ownership and carry laws are very restrictive, leaving residents helpless in everyday cutting situations or life-or-death confrontations that happen more frequently there.
When I have errands to run in Washington, D.C. for instance, I usually carry the Spyderco Micro Jimbo because the blade length is legal there and it looks like a little utility blade.
That usually gives me a sense of security (or at least, like I’m not naked!)
This past weekend, my wife and I went downtown for dinner and a show with some friends.
Having learned the hard way, all performance venues in D.C. tend to frisk patrons or use a metal-detecting wand on them as they enter, so I went with wallet, phone, and keys only.
No bludgeons, no blades, no pokeys or scrapies. No nothin’ but my softish body and the environment around me to fight with.
Luckily, as usual, that didn’t come into play.
I am grateful that a nighttime excursion to the nation’s capital, a city where they allow thugs to burn the American flag and fly a foreign one, or shoot 26 rounds into a moving car without so much as a hand slap (real stories from DC), turned out fine and fun.
No need; thank God.
On the other hand, it would have been nice to cut my exquisite lamb chops with an Agent-001!

The NoVA-2 EDC Kiradashi knife is a design collaboration between Bob DeMarco of the Knife Junkie Podcast and ABS Journeyman Bladesmith Matt Chase of Hogtooth Knives. Following on the success of the NoVA-1 EDC Bowie, the NoVA-2 takes inspiration from the same source, the Hogtooth Knives EDC Tanto, a fixed-blade knife that’s easy to carry in the uptight environs of Northern Virginia. The Knife Junkie decided to call this series NoVA (Northern Virginia), in honor of the DC suburbs.
