School work is back, and I don't mind it!
Who says you can't combine school work, research, and something you love!
It’s like I’m in 8th grade all over again.
See, it’s that time of year. That time of year when my oldest daughter exclaimed with a quiet panic that a major research project is due next week.
I arch one eyebrow at her and unleash the lecture I have at the ready for such occasions about time management and taking loved ones for granted.
Then I ask her what riveting topic of personal interest she decided to explore for this year’s science fair.
She muttered something about algae.
Algae wasn’t even assigned; she thought algae would be easy, but nothing is easy if you don’t give a damn about it.
“If it were my project, I’d do something about physics; you can see physics.”
She was relieved when I told her I would not help her with algae, but to go to her teacher and change to something she was actually interested in.
Lo and behold, the girl comes home from school and tells me she has sold her science teacher on a new idea for her science fair project!
“How does the initial angle of a blade effect the penetration of a knife thrown [without spin] at a target?”
“Huh, now it’s about knives.
Now I have to help her.”
Smart kid.
So we built a cardboard and foam target, dusted off my Cold Steel throwing knives, and I went to town, throwing and measuring, throwing and measuring.
She is still working on collating the data (not my job), so I am not sure what the scientific conclusion will be, but we learned three things for sure:
Manage your time wisely.
Don’t just go for "easy.”
Whenever you can, stick to what you know and love!
