Rethinking the Self-Defense Knife
Ultimately, self-defense knives are tools of self-reliance and liberation
Think of the self-defense knife as a space maker. Allow me to explain.
Often times, I catch myself thinking of the tactical knives I carry for self-defense as assassin’s tools, dueling weapons, or Plan A for dealing with attacks.
Those things can all be true, but I am not an assassin, no one duels anymore (let alone with knives), and going straight to the knife in a confrontation could be bad for everyone. But I’m changing the way I think about it.
Now I am actively trying to see the self-defense knife as a space maker, something that can:
Give you the valuable distance needed to escape and run from an attacker
Get out from beneath an attacker
Draw your firearm to shoot your attacker.
I am retraining myself to think of the self-defense knife as a means to an end (i.e., escape) and not an end in and of itself.
They say you become what you practice. If you practice dispatching your foe in training, that’s what you will do in reality.
Though I fill with righteous indignation at the thought of being physically attacked, I know the regret of unnecessarily ending a life, even that of a scumbag, would lead to a life of crippling regret.
Ultimately, self-defense knives are tools of self-reliance and liberation. They symbolize our ability to defend ourselves and allow us to gain freedom from the worst types of confrontation.
Distance is a tool and your most valuable ally in a fight, so, think about using one tool to obtain the other.
Survive and thrive!
