Personification of My Knives
Every knife deserves a good home and this knife already has one in my Craftsman tool chest
Like many, I do my best thinking in the shower.
It occurred to me this morning that I have a pretty simple but powerful way of justifying my sprawling collection and keeping knives around that I don’t even intend to carry or use. It’s personification.
Personification: the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman (Oxford Dictionary).
Every time it occurs to me to purge the collection down to its essence, or even just to “thin the herd” a bit, I begin to personify the knives themselves.
When I put a knife on the big chopping block in my head, I am cold and merciless, ready to cast said knife into the outer darkness where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth.
But when I pick the knife up and ready it for sale and it looks up at me with those big moon-pie eyes, (you know how they do…) I can’t got through with it.
Every knife deserves a good home and this knife already has one in my Craftsman tool chest.
I welcomed it in and now I’m just going to push it out? Who does that to another person?
See, I did it again.
This will no doubt take many more showers to work out.
Until then, I guess I just have to live with an ever-growing collection… think of it like an orphanage.
