Mother's Day is Next Weekend (May 14)
Don't forget your mom -- or special woman in your life -- with a knife!
This weekend don’t forget one of the greatest knife users in your life …
My parents came in from out of town this past weekend to celebrate my daughter’s First Holy Communion. When they visit, we spend lots of time just eating and drinking coffee and catching up. As usual, at some point, the conversation turned to knives and the podcast and my mom pulled a little knife from her bag. “This goes with me everywhere.”
She was holding the LOL Knife I made for her. I had named the knife something cool, like Defender or Reaper or Liberator but my mom renamed it the LOL Knife.
I assured her the little self-defense shiv was no laughing matter, it was, rather, a wicked little life-saver for cutting a sucker out of the picture.
“No Bobby, I don’t mean Laugh Out Loud Knife, I mean Little Old Lady Knife — it’s perfect for someone like me!”
My parents have always been world travelers, they’ve been to a lot of places, not all of them tourist destinations, not all of them nice. Even when they road trip in the States, they are not above staying in some seedy joints.
Mom says she keeps the LOL Knife on the bedside table and always has it around her neck when she leaves the motel/hotel room.
“You know Bobby women get attacked in the laundry rooms at motels all the time, the LOL Knife is always reassuring to me.”
I like that she doesn’t mind roughing it, but how’s a guy not supposed to worry about his mom going to motel laundry rooms?
This coming Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 14 — next week!) give your mom some edged reassurance, whether on the self-defense end, for gardening, or in the kitchen — she’s probably the greatest knife user you know!
Give her something sharp, useful, and nice to look at. She’ll love it!
Happy Mother’s Day!

The Knife Junkie Podcast (Episode 415)
Today’s podcast features Sam Curtis of Polite But Dangerous Tools, which is based in Alaska. And those rough landscapes are reflected in Sam’s knife designs. His knives emulate a primitive style, using repurposed steel and natural materials like wood and bone.
