I look around me and all I see are knives. This brings me both comfort and anxiety.
I have way more knives than I’ll ever use or that would ever be practical.
This means I am a collector, someone for whom a little something is off inside. That sounds harsh, but for me, it’s kind of true.
I have a hard time letting go of certain things. If I can find sentimental value in it, I keep it.
Maybe a collector is just a very focused hoarder.
Whatever the case, I think I have been working to make my den or man cave the kind of place I’d like to dig around in as a kid.
My Grandpa’s basement was a place like that, filled with tools, projects, and ephemera from a life behind him. Everything had a story and a purpose.
What is the purpose of the vast collection of knives that get no use and are only appreciated? By my definition, I am more of an art collector than a tool collector.
I guess the real question I ask myself is, “When is enough, enough?”
What! Am I just going to have a house that continues to fill up with knives?
Isn’t that weird? I have given lip service to “reduce and refine” but have a hard time seriously considering it.
Where do I start? Where do I end?
Well, until I figure out the answer to that most meta of questions a collector can ask himself, I will continue to make my knife collection and man cave as fascinating as it can be to my possible future grandsons and granddaughters. Pick away, Kiddos!
