I have never been one who gets all the new knives, but I think the best high-value folder of the year is clear.
Earlier in the year, Artisan/CJRB reached out to me and offered a copy of their new button lock folder in exchange for video content (presumably in a positive review).
Knowing that I love Artisan/CJRB already, I jumped at the opportunity.
I do not like to post negative reviews of knives, so I avoid promotional deals with brands I know will not pass my personal muster, but an offer from Artisan was very welcome.
My light blue Pyrite arrived, and I immediately noticed its superior smooth pivot and button lock action, it’s wicked sharp AR-RPM9 drop point blade, and it’s handsome profile.
Maybe it was the color, but I remember thinking at first that the knife was good but had “no soul,” an admittedly weak criticism of a factory-made Chinese knife. Really, it was just the size that was stopping me from falling head-over-heels.
Then CJRB came out with the large Pyrite, with its big and broad 4" blade and button lock action, and a variety of handle materials. Needless to say, I was intrigued. At this point, my original Pyrite was gone, riding in the purse of a friend in need, so a newer, larger one was just what the doctor ordered.
It wasn’t much of a choice for me when I saw the forest green Micarta handle they had on offer, with more blue in the mix than your usual OD green. I was smitten.
When the knife arrived, I was surprised a little by how well the EDC design translated into a larger folder. It had some lock stick at first, but that went away after the first day or 2,000 flicks (LOL), and as a cutter and slicer, the large Pyrite is very impressive and good to go for all common uses of a folder, even impromptu food preparation.
Now I’m just waiting for them to release a large Pyrite with the Wharncliffe blade and opening hole. I bet we'll see that by the end of the year.
