Father's Day is a special time to honor dads and father figures in our lives.
Did you know that Father's Day started because of a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd?
In 1909, she listened to a Mother's Day sermon and thought, "Hey, dads deserve a day too!" Sonora's own father, William Jackson Smart, raised six kids all by himself after his wife died. She wanted to honor his hard work and love.
The very first Father's Day celebration happened on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Sonora worked with local churches and the YMCA to make it happen. People wore roses to show appreciation for their dads—red for living fathers and white for those who had passed away.
At first, not everyone was excited about Father's Day. Some people thought it was just a way to sell more greeting cards! But Sonora didn't give up. She kept pushing for the holiday to be recognized.
It took a while, but finally, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson made Father's Day official. He declared it would be celebrated on the third Sunday of June each year. Then, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law making it a permanent national holiday.
Now, Father's Day is a big deal in the United States and many other countries.
This year, Father's Day is today, Sunday, June 16. It's the perfect time to show the father figures in your life how much they mean to you. Whether it's your dad, stepdad, grandfather, or another special man who's been there for you, take a moment to say "thanks" for all they do.
Remember, you don't need fancy gifts to make Father's Day special. Sometimes, the best gift is simply spending time together and letting dad know how much you care.
But if you want to give the gift of a knife, many online retailers have Father’s Day specials going on, including WE Knives, Civivi, Smoky Mountain Knife Works (affiliate links), and many others.
And if you’re a dad yourself, “Happy Father’s Day”!
