If it's true that you fight like you train, it's probably best to train with what you'll fight with.
I just received the training version of the Fisher Blades Beckwith Covert, a dedicated self-defense fixed-blade pocket knife.
The aluminum trainer is anodised in an electric cobalt blue with a matching G10 handle. The striking colorway is one of a few standards in knife trainers meant to be unmistakable from the live-bladed version. (I'd hate to be undercover at that high-stakes drug buy with a trainer accidentally in my pocket!)
I have been carrying the Beckwith Covert on and off for about a year. It makes for a great self-defense knife with it's wickedly sharp American Tanto blade and super ergonomic handle, designed to be carried in the pocket.
That last detail is a sticking point for me because my muscle memory does not really include drawing a fixed blade from the pocket.
So in the case of the Beckwith (and the Amtac Northman, for that matter), an unsharpened trainer is key to becoming familiar, comfortable, and fluid with drawing from the pocket in a moment of duress.
Now I need to order a trainer from T.Kell Knives for my most carried fixed blade self-defense knife and my design, the Agent-001.
Being a collector and someone who carries blades for self-defense can be a sketchy proposition, because you should be consistent in your tactical carry so that in the moment of truth, your defense requires no thought, just reflexive action.
But if you're a collector too, you crave daily variety. I have not quite reconciled all of this, but I know my first step to doing so is to get training blades for my most frequently carried fixed blades... where available, just in case.
Check out my recent video, “Old Man Has Fun Dusting Off His Knife Skills with The Beckwith Covert Trainer,” to see what I mean.
Some viewers thought it was pretty funny, but that was unintentional humor!
