Embracing Bruce Lee's 'Be Like Water' Philosophy
Will my new Craftsman tool chest be the answer?
Bruce Lee said, “Be like water, my friend,” meaning ultimately to remain flexible and adaptive to a changing situation—certainly words to live by.
In finally buying a new (and third) Craftsman tool chest to accommodate my growing collection of folders and fixed blades, it occurred to me that this “being like water,” is actually a double-edged sword.
Water is formless and adapts to the shape of the vessel it is in.
For a person, being like water means not being trapped in a rigid mindset.
For a collection, it means filling the vessel, nook and cranny, until it can hold no more and another vessel is required, like water would.
With this new knife chest, I aim to give the knives in my collection breathing room so that each one can be taken off it’s spine and viewed in full.
What I must avoid now is filling the new vessel with new knives because the space is there.
No sir, I will be disciplined. Just seeing all my knives in full as I rearrange has unearthed a few that I intend to carry more, as well as a few I can move along to some other lucky knife junkie.
I will try to live up to Bruce Lee’s philosophy and be like water in my thinking, approach to training, and creativity.
But when it comes to my knife collection, I think I will try to be more like molasses; it will still fill up every nook and cranny, but it will take longer and might leave a few air pockets.
Wish me luck with this new knife storage space; I’m sure it won’t fill up immediately!
