I am such a space cadet, but a lucky one.
If you are too young to remember the Space Cadet diss, it means flakey, forgetful, or daft, and I was all three when a box arrived on my doorstep this week.
It was a day ending in "Y,” so I came home from work hoping to see a box on the front stoop—more specifically, a box addressed to me with a knife inside. Well lo and behold, there it was: a box addressed to me, and that’s a good start.
I opened the mystery box in the presence of my daughters, who immediately convinced me that the box and the two knives I was pulling out of it were an anonymous gift from a fan, because I’m such a great guy.
I really wanted to believe that, and so for a moment, I did.
Then I did some quick math in my head that sounded something like this: “The Reate Exo is already expensive, and that exclusive blade will make it even more so, and that Tashi knife has to cost at least 5 bills, at least!”
After figuring that I was holding what may as well be $1,000
worth of folding knife, reality came crashing in.
“No one just gifted you these knives, even if you are a great guy. This is wishful thinking!”
I racked my memory, and through the haze that is my prefrontal cortex, the picture came into focus.
Turning to my DM, emails, and texts, I pieced it all back together, was reminded of who these exquisite knives really belong to, and was somewhat relieved. But I am also a little embarrassed at what a space cadet I can be.
