I had an especially heartwarming knife moment over my Christmas vacation.
Me and my ladies (wife and daughters) had a full week at home in the house together—no work, no school—a very rare occasion.
We had a great time being together and doing our own things apart.
For the girls, “doing your own thing” usually involves a screen. We indulged them a little, as it was vacation, but after a while, the vacant stare at the inanimate object made me feel like I was failing as a father.
“Screens off! Time to actually do something!” I announced through the house, then went about my own business shooting YouTube videos.
No, the irony is not lost on me.
Anyway, after some time, I wandered into my 9-year-old daughter’s room, and she was up to some serious crafting, turning a cereal box into a harp.
The greatest part was seeing her Rough Ryder Purple Sparkle Mini-Canoe pocket knife open on the floor.
My little girl didn’t ask permission to use her knife or to be supervised, and she didn’t fear the blade she was using.
That little canoe was just a means to an end (I have a cereal box and want a harp, and I will make it happen with this knife).
To be honest, I gave her the knife for the purple sparkle, but she recognized its true worth as a cutting tool.
I guess when you’re so “into” knives, you can sometimes miss the forest for the trees!
Thanks for the tip, little girl!
