A case for Case
If you know how to be selective, you can get a great folder worthy of handing down
It’s no secret, I love Case Knives, and to some, that puts me in a certain class of rubes who don’t know how to get the most knife for their money.
Case knives are for people for whom steel, grind, heat treat, fit, and performance don’t matter.
Frankly, I am tired of the Case hate.
Yes, sometimes their QC is lacking, but if you know how to be selective, you can get a great folder worthy of handing down.
First of all, buy as much as you can from their carbon steel or CV lines. You might be tempted away by the dazzling bone dye jobs on some of their stainless lines, but it pays to resist.
Their carbon steel gets very sharp and holds a nice edge consistently, something I cannot say about their TruSharp stainless steel (which seems better on their cheaper Workman series knives). Since they make fewer CV knives, I believe they pay more attention to them, resulting in higher quality.
Buy from Case’s carbon steel product lines and give them your own edge. I have recently gotten an SS Barlow, a CV Stockman, and a CV canoe. All three required lots of edge attention.
Out of the box, the knives were field-sharp, even but jagged as if ground at too high a grit.
Like Emerson Knives, Case Knives have a sort of break-in and adolescent period; if you are willing to weather the storm, it’s well worth it in the end.
I don’t want to become a grandpa ANY TIME SOON!
But when I do, I will be ready with an eclectic sub-collection of Case CV knives to have in hand as I dispense wisdom!
Knife Junkie out!
Michel Kahil, 310 Forge: The Knife Junkie Podcast (Episode 465)
Michel Kahil of 310 Forge is featured on Episode 465 of The Knife Junkie Podcast.
A full-time knife maker since November 2020, Michel's goal is to provide his customers with usable knives that can be passed down from generation to generation. His knives are forged from high-carbon steel with time-tested techniques. His work is also a testament to his love of tools, and he gives all the glory to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Michel always loved working with his hands and grew to love knives through his renowned knife-maker grandfather, Henry Frank. It was in college that Michel discovered his affinity for crafting, starting with leather and knives as a creative outlet and break from school.
His brother, a journeyman blacksmith, taught Michel the basics of the trade and started him on his knife-making path.
